REPORTING AND WRITING

BREAKING NEWS
Here are some of my hard news work samples. In high school, other academic and personal responsibilities occasionally got in the way of publishing stories immediately, but I’m consistently working toward breaking news as fast as possible while maintaining accuracy and nuance.

FEATURES
I’ve written some longer form news-features, two of which I’ve included here. One is a voter guide I created for our 2021 Board of Education elections. Another is my multi-part coverage of collective bargaining between Naperville District 203 and the Naperville Unit Education Association. I’m hoping to branch out to more human interest features as well in the coming years.

Election Coverage
Local politics isn’t just the bedrock of our democratic system. It also presents great opportunities to practice covering elections and campaigns in an intimate but still action packed environment. In the last three years, I’ve enjoyed getting the chance to report on local races, and I hope to apply and sharpen those skills more down the line.

OPINIONS AND EDITORIALS
As much as journalists must strive to check our biases in our work, submitting our arguments to the public forum is also important. I try to make my opinions and editorials rely on the logical flow of facts to arrive at truthful and contextualized conclusions.
Note: Many of the editorials I wrote in high school pertained to news I had also reported. However, all but one editorial came after I had finished covering the relevant news topics, and all editorials sprung from extensive discussion with our entire editorial board.
